Spotlight: Phil Robbins Journey as a Certified Crane Operator

Phil CCO Spotlight

Phil Robbins, a seasoned crane operator from the Detroit area, was selected as the second-ever CCO Candidate Spotlight. Phil’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of certification, dedication, and lifelong learning in the crane industry. His journey is an inspiration to both seasoned professionals and newcomers alike, illustrating the value of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.

During the recent interview, Phil discussed his career trajectory and emphasized the pivotal role his CCO certification has played in his success. “It’s an honor to be recognized in this way,” he said. He credited the certification for helping him navigate various challenges in the field, adding that it has been a crucial asset in advancing his career.

Phil's journey into crane operating began more than a decade ago when he joined Local 324, a union based in Detroit. Over the years, he has worked with a variety of contractors like John E. Green, primarily on projects for the "Big Three" automakers, General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford which have been investing heavily in electric vehicle production. This regional focus has allowed Phil to stay close to home while working on significant projects in the area.

“The fortunate part of living near Detroit is that there is always something that needs to be lifted,” Phil remarked. He explained that the steady work in the area allows him to stay close to home, often working within an hour’s drive. This local proximity has been beneficial both professionally and personally.

On a typical day, Phil's duties include unloading trucks, assisting with pipe assembly, and planning complex lifts. While his true passion lies in operating crawler cranes, recent work has often required the use of smaller, more maneuverable carry deck cranes. These cranes are particularly useful in the indoor environments of the automotive plants where Phil has spent much of his time. He enjoys the variety and challenge that each different crane brings, despite the shift in equipment size.

Before becoming a full-time crane operator, Phil spent several years as an oiler at a rental barn—a facility where several types of cranes are housed and dispatched to job sites throughout the state. This role allowed him to learn from seasoned crane operators and gain firsthand experience with a wide range of crane models. The skills and knowledge he acquired during this time laid a solid foundation for his future career as a crane operator.

“Working as an oiler was invaluable,” Phil reflected. “I had the chance to work alongside very experienced operators and learn the ins and outs of so many different crane models. That foundation has served me well throughout my career.” His time as an oiler provided him with a broad understanding of crane operations, which he continues to draw upon in his current work.

Outside of his professional life, Phil is an avid outdoorsman, spending his free time golfing, boating, and hunting. Growing up in the Midwest, he developed a deep love for these activities, which he continues to enjoy to this day. “Fishing, hunting, whatever the season bears fruit for—that’s what I enjoy doing.”

Phil’s dedication to his craft and passion for the crane industry are evident in his words and actions. His CCO certification, which he has maintained for many years, stands as a testament to his commitment to safety and professionalism. He believes that the CCO credential is more than just a certification—it’s a symbol of his dedication to performing his work in the safest and most efficient manner possible.

“The CCO certification is important to me because it demonstrates my expertise and commitment to operating cranes in the safest, most efficient manner possible,” Phil explained. “It’s a credential that is respected throughout the industry, and I’m proud to be part of that community.”

For Phil, being recognized as a CCO Candidate Spotlight is a humbling experience, but one that he hopes will inspire others in the crane industry. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and hopes that his story will motivate others to pursue their goals within the field.

“If my story can help motivate even one person to pursue their crane operating goals, then I’ll consider this a success,” Phil said. “I’m grateful for the chance to share my journey, and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn in this dynamic field.”
