Liebherr USA, Co. Sponsors Calculators for Use on CCO Exams

November 2016—In support of the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators’ policy of providing calculators for use by candidates on certain CCO written exams, Liebherr Mobile and Crawler Cranes, a division of Liebherr USA, Co., has agreed to sponsor the calculators through 2017.

liebherr-calculator-200xBasic calculators are supplied for CCO Mobile Crane Operator Specialty Exams, Digger Derrick Operator, Rigger Level II, Mobile Crane Inspector, Mobile Crane Lift Director, and Tower Crane Lift Director exams. Only NCCCO-provided calculators are permitted to be used; for security reasons, candidates may not bring their own calculators into the secure exam room. Candidates testing via computer-based testing are permitted to use an on-screen calculator.

“Liebherr is proud to support the CCO certification programs offered by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). Through this sponsorship, we hope to contribute to certification programs that play such a big role in equipment safety and help prepare the next generation of crane operators.” said Daniel Pitzer, Managing Director of Liebherr USA, Co., headquartered in Newport News, VA. “This highly visible sponsorship opportunity demonstrates Liebherr’s commitment to NCCCO’s primary mission of promoting safe lifting practices.” Liebherr Mobile and Crawler Cranes, division of Liebherr USA, Co., sells and markets Liebherr all-terrain and larger crawler cranes in the United States.

NCCCO began allowing calculators on specific exams in light of a study it commissioned and released in October 2011, The Effects of Calculator Use During NCCCO Testing. The study concluded that, while the use of calculators would not be appropriate for use on basic math questions such as those contained in CCO Core exams, their use would be supportable on load chart calculations used on CCO Specialty exams.

“We’re delighted that Liebherr has agreed to make this investment in support of CCO certification,” said NCCCO Commission Chairman, Ellis Vliet. “This will make a material difference to NCCCO’s ability to ensure a fair, valid, and reliable testing experience for all candidates, no matter where in the country they test.”
