Written Exam - Core Exam Outline
50 questions/60 minutes (calculator not permitted)
Required for Articulating Crane Inspector, Mobile Crane Inspector, and Tower Crane Inspector Certification ONLY
The Core Examination portion of the CCO Crane Inspector Written Examination tests the following knowledge areas relating to articulating, mobile, and tower cranes (this exam NOT required for Overhead Crane Inspector certification):
Domain 1: Pre-Inspection Survey/Knowledge of Standards
Approximately 20% of test
Domain 2: Records Review
Approximately 8% of test
Domain 3: Visual Inspection
Approximately 66% of test
Domain 4: Post-Inspection
Approximately 6% of test
DOMAIN 1: PRE-INSPECTION SURVEY/KNOWLEDGE OF STANDARDS
- Interpret the standards applicable to crane inspection, including but not limited to ASME B30
- Interpret the regulations applicable to crane inspection, including but not limited to OSHA
- Demonstrate basic crane terminology and definitions
- Recognize what to communicate to the site supervisor/personnel on needs/requirements for inspectionKnowledge of the standards and regulations applicable to crane inspection, including, but not limited to ASME B30 and OSHA
DOMAIN 2: RECORDS REVIEW
- Recognize if given documentation is correct
- Application
- Maintenance
- Engineering
- Identify which inspection records are required
- Demonstrate how to verify whether proper repairs have been performed with acceptable documentation
- Repairs and/or replacements
- Modifications and/or alterations
- Qualifications of the repair person
- Timeliness of repair
- Wire rope certifications
DOMAIN 3: VISUAL INSPECTION
- Identify and determine the following conditions:
- Proper weld
- Excessive corrosion
- Additional non-destructive testing
- Evaluate and assess wire rope, to include:
- Construction and specifications
- Reeving
- Rejection criteria
- Termination hardware
- Recognize existing or potential problems
- Identify modifications and alterations
- List and employ the manufacturers’ requirements:
- Inspections
- Maintenance
- Service requirements
- Limitations
- Recognize the requirements for component guarding
- Recognize and demonstrate inspection criteria for:
- Identify upper and lower operating station (cab) inspection requirements
- Identify the following for specific job site situations:
- Assist equipment (e.g., aerial work platform)
- Tools
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)al protective equipment (PPE)
DOMAIN 4: POST-INSPECTION
- Identify and demonstrate that the inspection/test procedure(s) did not cause damage per regulations and manufacturer’s requirements
- Document/communicate the deficiencies and recommendations on the final report
- Identify responsible parties involved in or pertaining to the post-inspection
